Explore Thailand :: Is the 'land of smiles' also the land of shopping, spas and... vineyards? A two-centre trip to Thailand provided the answer

'Welcome to the land of smiles,’ says the sign at Thailand’s international airport, Suvarnabhumi (pronounce it as if you're inviting someone to speak loudly: 'So, wanna boom?').

But is it also the land of spas, shopping and nightlife? I went to Bangkok and mainland coastal resort Hua Hin to find out.

I was based at the splendid Amari Watergate hotel in the city – reassuringly five-star with a beautiful roof-top pool and spa with hi-spec gym.

Pool with a view: Bangkok's Amari Watergate hotel's roof-top swimming pool overlooks the bustling city
Golden shot: one of the elaborate buildings at the Royal Grand Palace & Emerald Buddha complex
Poultry prices: a simple and cheap lunch of chicken and rice with soup and spicy sauce at famous Go Ang street restaurant

Sure enough, the Tom Yam Goong (spicy river prawn soup) had refined, complex flavours and was by some margin the best I've ever tasted.
