29/05/2015
The Special Meeting on Irregular Migration in the Indian Ocean has kicked off in Thailand to discuss solutions for boat migrants.

Foreign Minister General Thanasak Patimaprakorn presided over the opening ceremony. He said that high-ranking officials from 20 nations that have become a transit country for migrants are participating in the event.

Representatives from the United States, Switzerland and Japan are also in attendance to observe the forum.

Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs Norachit Sinhaseni said the event aims to help migrants traveling by sea, prevent human trafficking, and identify factors that triggered their migrations.

He added that this issue is a shared responsibility among nations facing illegal migrant issues. The Permanent Secretary reiterated that all the efforts to collaborate on the matter must not lead to conflict among countries involved.
