Thailand in Focus :: Thai economy remains unaffected by MERS, Fiscal Policy Office confirms

23/06/2015
Director of the Fiscal Policy Office Krisda Chinavicharana reveals that Thai economy remains unaffected despite the confirmation of the first MERS case in the country.

The outbreak of MERS virus in Thailand is still under control and its impact is less severe than the outbreak of SARS in 2003. Krisda, who is also the Finance Ministry spokesman indicated that no countries have upgraded risk warnings for their citizens to avoid traveling to Thailand so far, thus leaving Thai economy intact.

According to Krisda, foreign tourists are still coming to Thailand continuously through Suvarnabhumi Airport. From 18-21 June alone, the number of tourists expanded by 57.8 per cent while none of the reserved flights and accommodations were cancelled due to MERS.

“Impacts of the deadly virus on Thai economy, if any, should be minimal. The Fiscal Policy Office will continue monitoring the MERS situation at a close range,” Krisda said. Source: National News Bureau of Thailand
